The term “Business Coach” has become a very popular term in the business community these days. As business owners learn about the value of what a business coach provides to a business, more and more people are seeking out the support and guidance of a business coach.
I am Aaron Keith and I have been a professional business coach for over eight year. My intention with this article is to shed some light on the impact that having a business coach can have on your business, what to look for in a business coach, and how the coaching process actually works.
Why should you have a Business Coach?
A coach is there to point out what you can’t see; your blind spots. These blind spots are often the things that are keeping us from taking our business to that next level. Professional athletes have understood this for decades. They know they need someone who can point out the things they can’t see so they can perform at their very best.
Now there are two key areas that a business coach can work with you in that will have you become a more effective and successful business owner. Do you know what those two area’s are?
The first area is Systems & Structures. When a business has missing systems or structures it can cause the income of that business to go up and down each month. Sometimes the systems are not missing they are just not functioning properly. A business coach can work with you on developing the proper systems and structures for your business so your monthly income becomes more consistent as you expand your business.
The second key area is Mindset. This is the most important area of all. Our beliefs, thoughts and views on things dramatically affect the kind of results we are able to produce. Often times our current mindset is insufficient to get us to where we want to be. This is where a business coach can really provide a lot of value. They have the tools and training to work with us on developing a strong mindset that is a match to where we want to be. Often the largest increases in peoples businesses come when the coach uncovers a limiting belief that was hidden from the clients view. Remember, for a business to expand so must the mindset of that business owner.
What should you look for in a business coach?
One very important thing to be clear on is that Business Coaches are NOT Life Coaches. When looking for a business coach, you want to set up a consultation with several business coaches and during the consultation you want to inquire into their business background. Have they owned businesses of their own in the past? Where those businesses thriving successful businesses? How did they acquire their business knowledge? What do their clients increase their revenue by, on average after working with them? By doing consultations with several coaches you should be able to get a feel for how they approach business and what their coaching style is. Remember having a coach is a tremendous asset to you and your business, but it can only be an asset if you trust your coach and you have a solid connection and relationship with that person. That is why the consultation is such an important step in this process.
It’s also very important that you pick a coach that will not let you off the hook. You want someone who will hold your feet to the fire and do so in a compassionate way! You also want a coach who will tell it to you strait, even if it’s not what you want to hear. This is very important trait to look for in a business coach.
Make sure that the coach you hire tailors their coaching and the coaching program around your industry, your particular business and to You. You don’t want to be put into a cookie cutter program or coaching model.
Another important part to being in a successful coaching relationship is the duration of time that you work with a coach. Working with a business coach for less than 6 months is just to short. An effective coaching program should be 6 months or longer. Less than that is an insufficient amount of time to produce breakthrough results in a business. For a coach to go into a business, uncover what is not working and develop the systems and structures needed, then to have the owner implement those new systems and structures, and them produce a result just takes about 6 months.
Now once you have found a coach, what should you expect?
The first thing you will notice when you start with your business coach is that you will set up specific and measurable goals for your business. One of those goals must be financial; it’s the only true way to measure the growth of your business.
The next thing that will happen is you and your coach will create a plan for you to follow. That plan will guide you step by step to your set goals so you arrive at your goals on time and on target.
Once you start working with you coach you will notice that there is work involved. There will be things to figure out, things to create and to put in place. It’s important that you know that there will be times when you get confronted. Again there is work involved but you should also be experiencing a sense of empowerment and accomplishment.
There is one last thing that I want to say about my personal experience of having had a business coach. I have had a business coach for over 10 years. There is nothing more empowering than having someone who will not let you quit, and will never ever give up on you! It’s one of the most amazing experiences!
